The SETT framework is an occupational therapy organizational tool used when teams are providing assistive technology service delivery to students. Four elements are considered within this framework: the Student, the Environments, the Tasks, and the Tools. Based on the framework, considering these elements is the best way to develop an appropriate system to be used for each individual student's particular needs, and to make sure the process is personalized and holistic in nature.
Questions to ask your team for each element can include:
Student: What are this student's current abilities? What are the areas in which they need assistance? What instructional areas are of concern?
Environments: What are the characteristics of the student learning environment? What materials and tools are being used by students and teachers? What is the instructional setup of the environment? What is the physical layout of the environment?
Tasks: What educational expectations are placed on the student? What specific tasks must the student learn to perform in order to achieve success? What gaps exist between current performance and expectations?
Tools: What tools (high and low tech) are currently being implemented for student support? What additional tools are required and how will they help the student achieve success in the learning environment? Are there certain strategies that can be used to motivate performance? (Zabala, 2005).
Once the above elements have been considered, it will provide a fuller picture of the assistive technology needs for the student in order to achieve optimal performance in their educational occupations. From there, a plan can be implemented, making sure to also identify human resources, develop a timeline, train the student and staff to use the tools, and measure the intervention's effectiveness on student performance.
