Split/splay keyboards reduce the degree that the wrist is bent toward the pinky when typing, which helps to prevent carpal tunnel and strain. The sides of the keyboard can be lifted up to prevent downward rotation of palms by elevating or "tenting" the thumb. The split keyboards keep the home row at shoulder width for proper posture; splay keyboards keep the wrists straight even with bent elbows.
