The Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative (WATI) has put together the WATI assessment package - a process to functionally evaluate a student's need for assistive technology. The process is based on a team of professionals working together to gather data and address questions. The team should be made up of members who address each area of need for the child (a curriculum specialist, an OT or PT if there are motor or occupational difficulties, a SLP if there are speech limitations, parents, etc).
A procedure guide based on the SETT framework is first filled out to gather data about the student, their environments, their tasks and any tools that may be helpful to assist them in their educational occupations. From there, a comprehensive student information guide and an environmental observation guide are filled out to evaluate and collect data on the student (strengths, difficulties) and the environment (what AT is available, sensory considerations). The assessment package also includes an assistive technology decision-making guide to help identify different AT devices which may be useful based on area of need identified in the assessment.
